The SMCLK clock frequency is on startup around 1 MHz. Because timing is very important to send and decode UART signals, an additional clock calibration is needed. Calibration data for the DCO is stored in flash storage of the MSP430. DCO calibration data for 1, 8, 12 and 16 MHz is available.
