The band's name was taken from French fashion magazine, Dépêche mode, which means "fashion update" or "fashion news dispatch". Depeche Mode became famous in the 1980s. The band has sold over 100 million records around the world.

It's a song about being a Jesus for somebody else, someone to give you hope and care. It's about how Elvis Presley was her man and her mentor and how often that happens in love relationships; how everybody's heart is like a god in some way, and that's not a very balanced view of someone, is it? time.

The deeply religious country legend Johnny Cash famously covered the song in 2002 on his album American IV: The Man Comes Around. “I heard that as a gospel song,” he later stated. “I don't know that the writer ever meant it to be that, but that's what it is.”
